The Bear Growls: Harrah’s cover-up worsens; county official says, “Our whole focus is code compliance without being punitive”
By LVBear | November 4, 2007
Let me see if I understand this correctly. Harrah’s and some of its employees appear to have committed numerous violations of building codes, regulations and statutes by allowing shoddy work that clearly endangered hundreds of guests, but apparently none of the crooked Harrah’s employees, or the crooked county employees who facilitated these crimes, will be criminally prosecuted. While even these lowlife Harrah’s and county employees enjoy the presumption of innocence, it would appear that our equally corrupt DA would at least put on a dog and pony show attempted prosecution. To just let this go is beyond sickening. If I was to rob a bank; then when caught, simply offer to return the money, would I be forgiven and not prosecuted? I don’t think so.

Harrah’s Entertainment will not pay any county fines for defective or undocumented remodeling, despite its corporate stature and the extent of the remodel. “Our whole focus is code compliance without being punitive,” Assistant Clark County Manager Phil Rosenquist said in early October.

I rarely want federal intervention in local matters, but this is a case where the local authorities clearly are willing participants in the wrongdoing. This cries out for the U.S. Attorney to get involved. Let’s hope someone in that office has some integrity. They did not mind putting away the corrupt County Commissioners, and have pranced around hassling strip club owners. We’ll see if they have the intestinal fortitude to take on the Harrah’s crimes, and take on the corrupt local officials who enabled Harrah’s to commit these crimes, and now refuse to do their duty in prosecuting the crooks.
